Day 5 – Wednesday

Why do we do what we do?

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.”  Then the upright will say to him in reply, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you?  When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?”  And the King will answer, “In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” -Matthew 25:35-40

There you have it!  We do this because we all feel called to do so, but we also do it because those we serve make us feel good.

We do this because the Holy Spirit has called us to be His instruments to help change the lives of those we serve, and yet the Holy Spirit is using the girls, the elderly and our sponsored friends as His instruments to change the lives who serve them – US!

Remember that reciprocal relationship the Father and the Son had?  This is why we do what we do.

Today was our “Unbound Day”.  Four of us Fab Five members met with our sponsored child. Magda and Lynn had met their child before, but Joe and I had not.  For me, having just come off of the high of experiencing an Unbound Awarenss trip to Costa Rica in March, I knew what to expect.  Nonetheless, my visit with Karen and her mother Patricia and grandmother Maria was extremely moving. However, for Joe, he got to meet his 17 year old sponsored friend, Juan.  Joe described his day as amazing. Amazing because he met Juan for the first time after 16 years of sponsoring him. And to think that Juan’s brochure was placed in front of Joe and Rosemary years ago after Mass and they said yes to God’s call.  Because of their answer of yes, they have given Juan and his family food, drink, clothes…and 16 years later, thanks to Unbound, complete strangers welcomed each other into their lives. Today, Joe’s sponsorahip became real…his RELATIONSHIP became real…for both of them.

This is a gift of the Holy Spirit.  This is why we do what we do!
