Day 7 – Friday

Our final day was spent sharing gifts from our parish with all of the residents of each home. This has become a wonderful tradition and “gratitude” was the theme for the day. During breakfast at the elderly home, the nuns surprised us with a celebration for the feast day of St. John the Baptist with cake and music provided by the jovenes (the young ladies that live and work in the elderly home). They honored Jane (Juanita) as in Honduras this would be her patron saint. Another surprise!!  Feast days are regularly celebrated and fireworks could be heard throughout the day!

After breakfast, we shared small gifts with the elderly, nuns and jovenes –we received many blessing along the way. We proceeded to the orphanage and shared our gifts with the girls as well. The smallest girls in the house (chicas) were so excited and each of their faces lit up while opening these small gifts. Each girl received a book, as well as some small items such as hair accessories or crayons, etc. The students at St. Michael’s had prepared totes from recycled t-shirts/shirts. Some of the girls untied the totes and wore as tanks—may need to rethink our repurposing…

Later in the day, some of the team visited the cathedral which also is a “Holy Door” site for the Year of Mercy.  We completed our time with the girls with a pizza party and the girls put on a show for us including dancing, sharing small gifts for us and to bring back to the parish and words of thanks. Their words deeply moved all of us as we said our goodbyes. Our final stop was to visit a Mary statue located at the Catholic University not far from the orphanage. During a visit to Honduras in 2006, this statue shed tears and our team was present to witness this. We shared a decade of the rosary and some music with some of the nuns, girls and Joe Self.  During our grace filled week here, it seemed a perfect ending to spend time with the Blessed Mother.

Our team – Barb, Jane, Jason, Magda, and Mallory
