Day 3

We began our third day in Honduras up early with the roosters and one very energetic bird.  My first thought this morning…”How does that bird never get out of breath? By all laws of nature, he should have passed out an hour ago!”

We met for prayer and scripture from Matthew.  Unless we become like children we cannot enter the kingdom of God. We all agreed that although God is everywhere, He seems more prominent in the poorest of the poor. We all feel the presence of God so completely here.

After a breakfast of eggs, beans, tortillas and fresh avocado we joined the elderly in their courtyard to complete their picture frames, play games and of course dancing! Today was shaving day so all the hombres were looking muy guapo!

After lunch we headed to the orphanage to meet with the local CFCA staff. We spent the next couple hours helping CFCA staff distribute gifts from sponsors in our parish. As each girl was called upon to receive her sponsor’s package you could feel the excitement and anticipation. They were all so appreciative of the gifts they received. The girls always feel very special and loved when receiving their personal and individual packages.  The other girls are genuinely excited for their sisters/friends and there is sharing all around.

The rest of the afternoon Greg, David, Justin, Barbara and Jane spent painting the hallway and stairway walls. Considering there are anywhere from 47-54 girls living in the orphanage at any one time, normal wear and tear is expected. They take very good care of the daily maintenance.  While most of the team was painting, Barb and Lynn conducted their first book club meetings. Barb is working with the younger girls “Chicas” reading Clementine and Lynn is working with the pre-teen/teenagers  “Diamantes” and “Perlas” reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Discussions were translated by Dani. The groups will meet again on Saturday for more discussion and activities.  After our work we were all rewarded with game time. The girls enjoyed Jenga, Twister, Blink and other games.

Dinner discussion with the Sors in the orphanage was quite lively this evening!  After spending the day with a few mischievous girls we were curious as to the nuns childhoods, wondering if they had any less than angelic stories about themselves.  Although the stories began slowly, they soon developed flavor and momentum and we were all laughing throughout the meal. It is so nice to see the personal side of these women who have given their lives to God and through Him to the less fortunate.

Our evening ended with prayer and reflection.  Our day had been filled with constant craziness/activities/movement at the orphanage and somewhat quieter and serene time at the elderly home. One reflection was in regard to dancing with the elderly. Thoughts of how simple touch is so often over-looked but has such impact.  The gifts we can give freely are the gifts of our presence, our human touch and our hearts of love. All of which we have to offer without consequence as our Lord asks.
