Day Five June 11, 2012

We had another very full day. After breakfast we spent some wonderful quality time with the elderly. We learned more of their stories and are continually amazed by their strength and spirit.

Dani and Lynn’s sponsored child Digna Marleny and her mom came for a visit. It was great to see her, as always! They finally got a pila (a cement tub to hold water) at their house and although they don’t have running water, they don’t have to walk miles to get it. It is so great to see the benefits our godchildren receive with our sponsorship.  Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA) is doing wonderful work!

After Digna Marleny left, we were able to spend more time with the elderly.  We brought big balloons and they were a hit!! We had lunch and headed over to the orphanage to work on the rest of the journals and scrapbooks. The books for our book club didn’t arrive before our departure so we made due with the library books and being creative with their scrapbooks.

We spent the rest of the afternoon measuring screens and checking windows that needed to be replaced. We will be ordering screens and windows but don’t know if they will be ready before we have to leave. We changed light bulbs and worked on miscellaneous tasks around the orphanage.

We walked to the Catholic High School the girls attend and received a tour, it was nice to see the school the older girls attend.  We walked back to the orphanage to have a meeting with Sor Dinora to discuss the needs of the building and the girls.

We ended the evening by making an American dinner (Sloppy Joes, potato chips and fruit with brownies and ice cream for desert) for all the Sors and Joe. It is such a pleasure to serve these wonderful giving people. We are in awe at their sacrifice and nurturing spirits.

It was another wonderful day and although we are all exhausted every night when we sit down to do our prayer and reflection, we are very happy to be here and to serve such wonderful people.
